This home is managed by ADWI and is dedicated to introducing sustainable approaches to tackle environmental challenges in Kifri and Halabja. The center serves as a model for environmentally friendly living, showcasing practical solutions that promote sustainability, ecological harmony, and community empowerment.
The Model House: A Sustainable and Replicable Housing Solution
The Model House is a forward-thinking response to the growing need for sustainable and resource-efficient living. Drawing inspiration from traditional homes in Kifri, it is carefully designed using locally sourced materials and practical construction methods that are both cost-effective and environmentally responsible.
Its structure features insulated walls built from regional materials, enhancing energy efficiency while reducing the building’s ecological footprint. Water conservation is addressed through an integrated grey water system that recycles household wastewater for secondary use, supporting a more sustainable approach to daily living.
Above, a rooftop garden contributes to natural cooling, promotes urban agriculture, and supports biodiversity within the home environment. Energy needs are fully met through a solar power system, allowing the house to function independently from the grid while producing no waste or emissions.
This house stands not only as a model of innovation but also as a proof of concept, demonstrating that sustainable, zero-waste housing is possible, practical, and well-suited to the local context of Kifri and beyond.
MALIAWA promotes more than just sustainable building
Plastic pressing hub
Maliawa collects nearly 25kg of plastic daily, totaling 500kg monthly through a network of schools, hospitals, restaurants, and public spaces.
Maliawa placed waste-collection cages throughout the Kifri district and the Halabja governorate. and connected them with tuk-tuk drivers who transfer the collected plastic when the cage is full. Later in the Center, the collected plastic is separated into two sections, the heads of the plastic bottles are shredded and melted into molds, which gives us recycled products later sold in the center. The bodies of the bottles are washed, pressed, and prepared for selling. Bigger companies buy the pressed plastic and transfer it abroad.
Recycling and Upcycling Section
At the heart of MALIAWA is its recycling section, which focuses on collecting and processing plastic waste from Kifri and the broader Garmyan region.
Utilizing innovative upcycling techniques, the center transforms plastic waste into high-quality, practical products, such as furniture and other usable items. This approach not only reduces
environmental waste, but also generates valuable resources, contributing to a circular economy.
By actively engaging in waste reduction and resource creation, MALIAWA plays a vital role in preserving the environment while empowering the local community through education and
employment opportunities.
Ongoing Environmental Awareness by Maliawa
Maliawa leads a year-round environmental awareness campaign focused on the current state of the environment, the dangers of plastic pollution, and the importance of sustainable housing solutions. As part of this initiative, two trained outreach team members, Shene and Mariam, regularly visit schools, community centers, and public spaces to engage with individuals of all ages and promote environmental responsibility.
This on-the-ground effort is supported by a strong digital presence through Instagram and Facebook, where Maliawa consistently shares informative content, educational materials, and updates to further expand the reach and impact of its message.
Together, the direct engagement and social media strategy form a comprehensive approach to environmental education, empowering communities to take action and embrace sustainable living.
